Topological insulators are strange stuff. The bulk of such a crystal is insulating and cannot carry an electrical current, yet the surfaces of that same crystal are conducting.
In this chapter we review the status of transport studies through 3D topological insulators as of early summer 2012, after that a first generation of experiments has been performed. The results provide many different indications of the presence of surface fermions, as well as evidence of their Dirac nature.
Conventionally, the realization of a specific topological phase in condensed matter physics relies on probing the underlying surface band dispersion or quantum transport signature of a real material, which may be imperfect or even absent. 2019-08-16 · Topological insulators (TIs) host robust edge or surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS), which makes them prime candidates for applications in spintronic devices. A promising avenue of research for the development of functional TI devices has involved doping of three-dimensional (3D) TI thin film and bulk materials with magnetic elements. The importance of global band topology is unequivocally recognized in condensed matter physics, and new states of matter, such as topological insulators, have been discovered. Owing to their bulk band topology, 3D topological insulators possess a massless Dirac dispersion with spin-momentum locking at the surface. Although 3D topological insulators were originally proposed in time-reversal Topological insulators represent a new quantum state of matter which is characterized by peculiar edge or surface states that show up due to a topological character of the bulk wave functions.

Pavan Hosur, Roger Mong, Ashvin Vishwanath. A semi-short review on Topological insulators In this review, we discuss recent progress in the explorations of topological materials beyond topological insulators; specifically, we focus on topological crystalline insulators and bulk topological superconductors. The basic concepts, model Hamiltonians, and novel electronic properties of these new topological materials are explained.
2 topological invariant governs the effect, in three dimensions there are 4 invariants distinguishing 16 phases with two general classes: weak (WTI) and strong (STI) topological insulators. The WTI are like layered 2D QSH states, but are destroyed by disorder. The STI are robust and lead to novel ‘‘topological metal’’ surface states.
Magnetic topological insulators are three dimensional magnetic materials with a non-trivial topological index protected by a symmetry other than time-reversal. In contrast with a non-magnetic topological insulator, a magnetic topological insulator can have naturally gapped surface states as long as the quantizing symmetry is broken at the surface. 2012-07-09 Chris Hooley explains this phenomenon in 100 seconds. As a new class of quantum matter, topological insulators with insulating bulk and conducting surface states have attracted attention in more and more research fields other than condensed matter physics due to their intrinsic physical properties, which We review 3D topological insulators (as introduced in Sec. II B) and their response when irradiated with light. Due to the presence of TR symmetry, a new term can be added to the action of the system, 29 29. In this article, we will review recent progress in the growth of topological insulator (TI) thin films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The materials we focus on are the V2-VI3 family of TIs. These materials are ideally bulk insulating with surface states housing Dirac excitations which are spin-momentum locked.

http://physicsworld.com/cws/channel/multimedia 2012-05-14 · A topological insulator’s surface is not an ordinary metal, however. The direction and spin of the surface electrons are locked together and change in concert. And perhaps the most surprising prediction is that the surface electrons cannot be scattered by defects or other perturbations and thus meet little or no resistance as they travel. In recent years, three-dimensional topological insulators (3DTI) as a novel state of quantum matter have become a hot topic in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials sciences.
